Thomas R. Quilter III has been an attorney with Abbott, Nicholson, Quilter, Esshaki & Youngblood, P.C. since its inception and is one of its founding members. He is a member of the Firm's Business Section, which includes Practice Groups for Business Entities, M & A, Tax Planning and Wealth Preservation. His primary practice areas include business planning, corporate law and estate planning.
Tom acts as a business counselor and confidant to business owners and entrepreneurs. He advises clients on business formation, operations and succession planning. He has represented clients in numerous merger and acquisition transactions. Moreover, he has a significant practice in estate planning for high net worth individuals and business owners.
Outside of legal practice, Tom led a highly visible civic organization. He served six years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Detroit Athletic Club and was elected President for the year 1998. He held several officer positions and chaired several committees leading up to the Presidency. This Club has over 4,000 members, including the most prominent business and industrial leaders of Metropolitan Detroit. He spearheaded the multi-million dollar renovation and restoration of an 90 year old classic clubhouse. As a leader and President, he demonstrated executive and management skills energizing growth in membership, achieving financially sound operations and creating a master plan for capital improvements.
His professional affiliations include membership in the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan, as well as a Fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation. Further, he is active in the Financial and Estate Planning Council of Metropolitan Detroit, Inc. Over the years, he has served on numerous boards for charitable and civic organizations. Tom was honored as a Michigan Super Lawyer in 2007, 2008 and 2009 in the area of business/corporate. In 2009, Tom was also recognized as a Top Lawyer in Metro Detroit – 2010 by DBusiness Magazine.
Tom Quilter received his undergraduate degree from John Carroll University (B.S.B.A. in 1965), and both his law degree (J.D. in 1968) and his master of laws (L.L.M. in 1972) from Wayne State University. Tom holds an "AV" rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the highest rating awarded attorneys by their peers. He and his wife live in the Metro Detroit Area and have two adult married children and grandchildren.
